For those who desire to understand prophecy, whether receiving it or delivering it, a key principle is to understand that there is a spirit behind all true prophecy. This should not surprise us because prophecy is essentially the receiving and communicating of God’s will, and God himself is spirit (John 4:24). Furthermore, understanding what the spirit of prophecy is will also help us weigh or test prophecy (1 Corinthians 14:29).

The power of testimony

When we talk about a testimony in a Christian context we often mean ‘my personal story of how I came to accept Jesus as my Lord and saviour’. But a testimony can also be about other experiences of Gods divine intervention too. For example, for a transformed life, a healing miracle or for any unexpected blessing. A testimony is something we may share in public, in front of an audience, but it can also be shared with an individual in a simple everyday way.

In The book of Revelation the apostle John tells of an amazing prophetic experience. He is shown the end of the age and the beginning of the one to come by an angel. At one point he is so overwhelmed by the glory of the angel that he falls down to worship it, but the angel quickly stops him:

And I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “See that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” Revelation 19:10

What did he mean by that? Well, putting it very simply, the testimony of Jesus is that he died and rose again to make all things new (Revelation 21:5). He is the saviour of the world (John 3:16). And this testimony is at the heart of all true prophecy.

Getting back to our testimony or witness to the work of God in our lives, the act of testifying to Gods goodness has the essence of prophecy within it because every time we honour Jesus like this we are releasing the power of the gospel; to save, heal and deliver. Let me explain…

The Ark of the Covenant

Ark of the Covenant

Part of the root Hebrew word for testimony means to be a witness but it also means ‘to return, repeat, do again’. That’s why one of the names for the ark of the covenant was also, ‘the ark of the testimony’ (Exodus 25:16), because it contained elements which testified to Gods promises made in the past (Hebrews 9:4). But also it was the place of present and continuing encounter (the place of meeting). It was where God would ‘return, repeat and do again’ the miracles and wonders that he’d done before.

The power to overcome

Every time we testify to the reality of the power of God in our lives it contains the testimony of Jesus and therefore the spirit of prophecy. And when we testify like this it releases present and future power to save again, heal again or deliver again…

That’s why in revelation we are told that the saints overcame their enemy, the accuser, “by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony” (Revelation‬ ‭12:11‬). Because testimony (about the work of Christ in our lives) releases the power of God.

This doesn’t mean that every time we testify to Gods goodness in our lives we have to explain the whole gospel message, any more than it does when we prophesy. We may prophesy over someone’s life, “God loves you and has great plans for you”, or “I see you going to the lost, to the dark places and ministering in healing”. We don’t explicitly explain the gospel, but the reality of it is behind or within the words.

You may not think of yourself as being ‘prophetic’ or having ‘prophetic gifting’ but if you speak to others of God’s goodness in your life then you are already operating according to the spirit of prophecy. The testimony you release is prophetic in nature because it releases the power of God to ‘return, repeat and do again’. I’m not suggesting that prophecy ends here (with testimony) but that the testimony of Jesus is the source, the spirit, the very beginning of the prophetic flow. So the next time you speak of the goodness of God in your own life to others, whether great or small, miraculous or commonplace, remember that you are releasing the power of God to bless others too, and that is the spirit of prophecy; the testimony of Jesus.

I was reading in the gospel of John recently and a couple of verses really jumped out at me! They were verses that I’m sure I’d read many times but I never really saw their significance. They made me think – “Well look at that! Just when Jesus needed a boost of encouragement look at what John the Baptist did!” It made me think of all those times that we feel like we missed it, that never seemed to bear fruit and yet… when the time was right…!

John had never seen the miracles of Jesus for himself and in his final days he even began to wonder if he’d got it all wrong. However, Jesus replied to his messengers:

“Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.” Luke 7:22

So to set the scene, it was some time after John the Baptist had been martyred and the opposition towards Jesus was ramping up significantly. One such miracle was the healing of a man blind from birth (John 9) – a Messianic act if ever there was one. And as amazing as this was, rather than getting Jesus recognised by the religious authorities they called his subsequent claim that “I and the Father are one.” (John 10:30) blasphemy and so they tried to stone him to death:

“Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him…” “Again they tried to seize him, but he escaped their grasp.” John 10:31 & 39

However, the time was not yet right for his arrest so look what Jesus does next (and this is the scripture I want to highlight):

“Then Jesus went back across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing in the early days. There he stayed, and many people came to him. They said, “Though John never performed a sign, all that John said about this man was true.” And in that place many believed in Jesus.John‬ ‭10:40-42‬ ‭NIV

I find it moving that when the opposition was really heating up against Jesus in Jerusalem that he went back to a place where John had been preparing a people who were ready to receive him – ‘and there he stayed’. It may have taken longer than John anticipated and he himself had already passed into glory (very much alive in the great cloud of witnesses), but that community ‘from the early days’ received their visitation and believed.

John was the greatest ‘born of women’ but the least in the Kingdom or ‘born of the Spirit’ (Matthew 11:11) but he knew Jesus was coming to change everything (‘the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world’ John 1:29) , so he preached about Jesus who would perform many signs and baptise with fire. And so when Jesus arrived in this community where John had been preaching about Jesus they said:

“Though John never performed a sign, all that John said about this man was true.” And in that place many believed in Jesus.

It reminds us (and some of you reading need to hear this) that while our efforts may not seem like they are bearing visible fruit right now, they are certainly preparing the ground in the lives of people for a divine visitation to come. However, and this is important – though we can be encouraged by this story, we must not put ourselves in Johns shoes because he was part of the Old Covenant. We are not powerless (in the realm of miracles) as he was, praying for God to send revival. Unlike John the Baptist we are those ‘born from above’ and ‘baptised with fire’ and so we ourselves are the ones who bring the visitation of Jesus – the manifestations of the Spirit; signs, the wonders and the miracles that accompany salvation (John 14:12).

So let’s shift the paradigm to a New Covenant one and expect that, as we step out in faith for healing, deliverance and all the manifestations of the Kingdom that Jesus will be present in all his miracle working power in the place of our faithful witness and that many will believe. Because, when the time is right – in God’s time, there will be a rich harvest.

A prayer

Lord Jesus, I thank you for the reader and their faithful testimony. I thank you that through your servant you are preparing a way – making the ground even and the paths straight – for your kingdom to come in their place of witness – wherever that might be. Lord encourage them that, though sometimes nothing seems to be happening, there is much happening in the heavenly realms that will bear much Kingdom fruit and give you glory. Let YOUR Kingdom come and YOUR will be done TODAY!… as you protect their health and assignment, revive their energy and passion for the Kingdom, provide for them all they need and give them strength and joy in the Spirit each and every day. For your sake and for your Kingdom.

Bless you, in Jesus name… Amen

This article is for those who seek to serve the Lord Jesus through the ministry of healing. To be more specific, we’re talking about what we should do if we’ve stepped out in faith for a healing and nothing happens? Beyond, “Have more faith and just keep praying” (which is actually a pretty good response), is there anything else we can do? For most it’s a very common question and experience. Sometimes in our workshops we’ll ask “Who has ever prayed for healing for someone and nothing happened?” You’ve guessed it – pretty much every hand goes up!

Just to put this in context at the outset:

  • We see in the New Testament that healing ministry is made available to all believers because we are to be equipped by the fivefold ministries to be ministers of the gospel (salvation, healing and deliverance) Ephesians 4:12
  • Healing is an empowerment of the Holy Spirit (modelled and mandated by Jesus) that comes through an acknowledgement of the Lordship of Christ in a person’s life (1 Corinthians 12:4)
  • We also see that the practice of believers in the New Testament was almost exclusively to use the command of healing rather than the request of healing – so that is our template for new covenant healing ministry

Article: Should I Command or Ask for Healing?

So, getting back to our question, in the first instance what many are concerned about is what we actually say to the person we prayed for ‘if nothing happens’. It’s potentially an awkward situation for both of us. They may feel as if they don’t qualify for healing and we can feel as if we’ve let them down. And this, if we’re honest, is why many believers avoid healing ministry altogether.

So here’s 7 simple principles on the theme of healing ministry to remember when you find yourself in this situation and asking the question, “I prayed for healing and they didn’t get better, what do I do next?”

1: SOMETHING ALWAYS HAPPENS!

I can’t state this too strongly. If you find yourself saying, “I released the healing power of Jesus and nothing happened” you’re just wrong! Something always happens when we step out in faith like this. Something happens in the spiritual realm, something happens in the person releasing the power and something is definitely happening in the person receiving ministry – you may just not be aware of it because you are focussed on a very specific (physical) outcome.

Healing ministry is the ministry of the Holy Spirit and an aspect of “his incomparably great power for us who believe”. We may not be seeing the physical manifestation of it (although it’s rare to have no improvement at all), but a great deal of activity may be happening on a spiritual, emotional or soulish level. Often people strongly sense the presence of the Holy Spirit or even feel a sensation of heat as the healing begins.

Furthermore, simply reaching out in love and compassion speaks volumes. It says, “I care that you are suffering”, “I agree with you for healing”. It also speaks to the spiritual powers, “I believe in the power of the cross”, “I live and stand on what Jesus taught and said” And that’s not nothing – that really is something powerful!

“Love never fails” 1 Corinthians 13:8. Or Agape love ‘never fades or ends’ (AMP).

One lady recently told Aliss that, what had really moved her, even more than the relief from arthritis she experienced for the first time in years, was the physical touch of compassion and love. Ministry is essentially about faith relationships. It’s about heart to heart connection – both between people and with God. There is a great healing power in that alone (often more than we know).

2: BE GUIDED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT

If the simple command of faith for healing is ‘not working’, don’t give up! Ask the Holy Spirit questions, “What is happening with this person – what’s going on?”

Jesus ministered differently on many occasions. In one case Jesus spoke to a fever as if it was a demon and told it to leave:

“He stood very close to her and ordered the sickness to go away.” Luke 4:39

In another case he simply commanded the deaf ears to be opened:

“He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”).” Mark 7:34

And in another he asks a lame man if he actually wants to be healed (because in this case it was important for him to say it):

“When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”” John 5:6

In the 1 Corinthians 12 passage of the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit healing is listed as ‘gifts of healing’. This is the only gift that is referred to in the plural (gifts) because healing is such a diverse ministry concerning the whole person – body, soul and spirit. The Holy Spirit will guide you in how to minister healing if you continue to ask in faith and expectation.

But beyond this – as I’ve said, spiritual power has been released and often – even a small manifest improvement (whether spiritual, emotional or physical) is to be recognised and encouraged: “Come on! Let’s keep going”!

3: FOCUS ON THE OUTCOME

Sickness is a lack of health and wholeness. As darkness is an absence of light, sickness is not an entity in itself but an absence of health and wholeness. When we are ministering healing in the authority and name of Jesus we are essentially releasing power to restore that person’s body to health and wholeness (it’s healthy, pain-free state).

Yes tell the problem to go – but primarily tell the wholeness to come and manifest in its place. Sometimes our language can inadvertently ‘big up’ or empower the problem if all we do is focus on it (saying its name over and over again) instead of emphasising the goal of radiant health.

So instead of – “Tendonitis I command you to go in the name of Jesus” Try rather: “Tendons I command you in the name of Jesus to do the job you were created to do, come into alignment, be the right tension and length, be flexible and powerful, pain free and a wonderful blessing!!”

The difference is subtle but significant.

4: HEALING IS A JOURNEY

Let’s face it, we’re complicated! A human being is a unique combination of physical body, spirit and soul. Every second of every day we are developing and growing and changing. The human body itself is a complex collection of 36 Trillion Cells, about 330 billion of which are replaced every day. You’re not the same person today as you were yesterday!

Though supernatural healing can be instantaneous and miraculous it can also be part of a bigger picture – or one link in a chain of events/encounters – involving spiritual revelation and knowledge of God. After all, healing (the path to wholeness) according to the Bible is ultimately a process of transformation – knowing and being known by God (2 Corinthians 3:18).

Add to this: lifestyle choices, mental health, medicinal treatments (many of which have side effects), diet, exercise, sleep etc. It’s no wonder Jesus ministered to the whole person for salvation, healing and deliverance. All ministries in one sense are healing ministries whether for salvation, healing or deliverance. For this reason, it’s good to remember as we minister in healing, that healing (both spiritual and physical) is often a process (or a developing relationship with God, who is life, John 14:6) –  not a single one off event that just happens in isolation and is done.

This is in no way to downplay the importance of the supernatural miracle-working power of Jesus to do what no doctor can do in an instant! It’s just good to remember this holistic context of the big picture when ministering to others.

5: BE KIND, CONFIDENT AND CALM

It may not seem very spiritual but try to develop good people skills. Don’t panic. Be calm and confident. Be alert with your eyes open and communicate clearly. You don’t need to be an expert but work together with the person you are ministering to. Ask questions like, “What’s happening, can you feel any change”? “OK, let’s pray again”, or “Don’t worry, I think there’s something else going on here, let’s wait on the Holy Spirit and see how he wants to guide us.”

Many times when Aliss and I have been ministering together – even to complete strangers that know nothing of the gospel – they are more than willing to engage in the process. After all, as I said, they are already impacted that somebody actually cares and they are working with you.

So if it helps, you can say things like, “Let’s expect things to improve and see what God wants to do next – this might take time” Keep your eyes and heart open and treat the person with love and respect.

6: BE OPEN AND TEACHABLE

We can learn from our mistakes, but only if we approach what we’re doing with humility and a teachable spirit. When reflecting on times of healing ministry that don’t seem to be bearing fruit, keep thanking God for what he is doing (both in you and through you) but also talk to the Holy Spirit about what you are NOT seeing. “What’s the blockage?” “What is stopping this healing from coming?”

Aliss does a whole workshop session on ‘blockages to healing’ and we have also produced a video episode on this training portal on the same subject, plus there is a very helpful chapter on this in her book ‘How to be Healed and Stay Healed’. So always ask the Holy Spirit for discernment or direction if the supernatural healing flow seems to have stalled.

Ask the Holy Spirit if there is anything that you need to say or do differently next time.

How to Be Healed and Stay Healed by Aliss Cresswell

7: GET MENTORED!

And finally. you may benefit greatly from others who are more experienced and flowing in healing ministry than you are at the moment.

Spend time, if possible, with someone who is more mature than you in the ministry of healing and be mentored and discipled. Don’t pester them but be a blessing to them – hold their coat and learn! Keep practicing, read scripture and books on the subject and keep stepping out in faith – if your heart is right and you are a willing vessel your gift will grow and breakthrough will come!

…AND KEEP GOING!

So I hope that has encouraged all of you who are brave enough to step out in faith for healing for others. Don’t give up – but keep expecting miracles. Healing is an exciting but challenging area and we need all the encouragement and support we can get! Regardless of religion or faith in anything particular, many people intuitively sense what it means to be a spiritual person. So, you may ask yourself the question, ‘How spiritual am I?’

A quick Google of the word ‘spiritual’ will produce a colourful mash-up of eastern imagery mixed with planets, sunsets and candles. Is ‘spiritual’ simply being aware of ‘the universe’ or ‘universal energy’? Many people will use religious paraphernalia as lucky charms; adding a $9.99 trinket to their shopping cart along with the groceries. Does that make us spiritual?

But beyond the stereotypes of spa treatments, yoga and ambient chime music what really makes a person spiritual? Is it the ability to understand metaphysical concepts or is it more to do with moral integrity? Is it an openness to supernatural phenomena or is it something more proactive involving some level of intentional participation?

WHAT MAKES SOMEONE SPIRITUAL?

What if I were to ask you if you consider yourself a spiritual person? What would you say? You might point to the fact that you regularly go to an organized spiritual meeting or are a member of a religious group. On the other hand you may dabble in a bit of reiki or read the horoscope once a week. Perhaps you have joined in with the recent trend of ‘mindfulness’? But most likely, you don’t really know, because honestly, you haven’t given it much thought.

Spirituality or the supernatural is, by definition, a mysterious concept. It’s the metaphysical – the invisible, the hidden realm. Could it be that we are reluctant to consider or talk about our thoughts towards a spiritual reality because we don’t want to be seen as weak minded or gullible? Isn’t it something we grow out of and just for kids?

SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES

On the contrary, in our experience, it seems like many people we meet are happy to talk about their spiritual experiences once we have broached the subject. We were chatting to a lady just a few days ago about her home. After we mentioned some of our own experiences of the supernatural she began to confide in us that the ghost of her dead mother would knock on the upstairs landing most days at three o’clock in the afternoon. It didn’t bother her – in fact, she seemed amused by it!

Then there was the time a guy spoke to my wife Aliss in his shop recently (he was an intelligent businessman). He surprised her by saying, quite matter-of-fact, that he was sure there was a spiritual war going on! He wasn’t a church person or of any particular faith, but he was personally convinced, especially after the covid pandemic, that there was more to life than meets the eye.

Many are tired of rationalism and are looking for answers elsewhere. For example – picture this: You suddenly think about an old friend or acquaintance you haven’t seen or thought about for 10 years. You actually say out loud; “I wonder how they’re doing, I hope they’re OK”. The very next day, ‘out of the blue’, they call you!

Believe it or not that is quite a common phenomenon. So what was that? Was it a coincidence? Did you make that phone call manifest? Or was it some kind of premonition – spiritual foresight? What do you think?

HOW SPIRITUAL ARE YOU?

So what’s your attitude towards spirituality or a spiritual dimension? Are you sceptical or more open and agnostic? Do you look for supernatural phenomena or try and figure out what’s going on if unexpected things are happening?

Here at Spirit Lifestyle we’ve put together this short quiz to help you perhaps understand a little more clearly how you approach spiritual phenomena, experiences or ideas… Why not give it a go – you might be surprised…

‘WHAT SHOULD I PRAY FOR HEALING’? ‘When it comes to healing (for myself or others) what actually is the role of prayer’?

In my article ‘DO I COMMAND HEALING OR ASK FOR IT?’ I showed how in every account of healing in the book of Acts the COMMAND of HEALING was used rather than the REQUEST of HEALING (or ‘asking God to heal’ others). So this then raises some further questions, “What should I pray for healing?” “Is there any place for healing requests to be made in prayer for healing?”

When Jesus Promised us, “You may ask for anything in my name and I will do it” (John 14:14), what did he mean and what did that look like for the early church? As we’ve established throughout the book of Acts, the early believers were using the COMMAND to heal and restore – so what were they asking God or praying for?

THE PRAYER LIFE OF THE FIRST BELIEVERS

Prayer is the primary focus at the beginning of Acts as the followers of Jesus obey his instruction to “wait for the gift my Father promised” Acts‬ ‭1‬:‭4‬ and so “They all joined together constantly in prayer...” Acts‬ ‭1‬:‭14‬

I think it’s pretty clear that after Jesus had ascended to heaven all one hundred and twenty believers were praying (as best they could) for “the gift” that Jesus had promised – the Holy Spirit to come – and they were not disappointed!

“Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues (different languages) as the Spirit enabled them.” ACTS 2:2-3

The baptism of the Holy Spirit (and the subsequent in-fillings Eph 5:18) is for being an effective witness to Jesus, both personally (1 Cor 15:57) and publicly (living the Spirit empowered life). After all Jesus had promised them:

The Holy Spirit will come upon you and you will be filled with power. And you will be my messengers to Jerusalem, throughout Judea, the distant provinces — even to the remotest places on earth! Acts 1:8

So the baptism of the Holy Spirit is a necessary requirement if we are to be filled with power to be effective witnesses. This is specifically what Jesus was alluding to when he told his disciples in John 14:

“whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing” and “You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.” Because I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you foreverthe Spirit of truth.”

So what Jesus is telling us (‘whoever believes in me’) is that we will be anointed (filled with the Spirit) and move in miracles and healing – just like he did:

“how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil” Acts 10:38

So what has that got to do with healing? EVERYTHING! The Holy Spirit is God (1 Cor 2:10-12) and all true healing comes from God (Psalm 103:2-3). If we are in need of a healing touch or we desire to minister in healing to others this has to be our number one prayer – THE BAPTISM And INFILLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

And that’s one of the mysteries to healing and restoration in God’s Kingdom – forgetting about the NEED, or the LACK and focus our prayers entirely on THE source of all healing and wholeness – the LORD himself (1 Peter 2:24).

The result of this baptism in the Holy Spirit on those 120 believers was that they began to perform “many wonders and signs.” Acts‬ ‭2‬:‭43‬ which, as we saw, was namely through the COMMAND of authority over sickness (see: ‘DO I COMMAND HEALING OR ASK FOR IT?‘).

So – what the early church pray for next:

“enable your servants to speak your word with GREAT BOLDNESS. Stretch out your hand to heal and PERFORM SIGNS AND WONDERS through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”” Acts‬ ‭4‬:‭29‬-‭30

So PRAYER REQUEST NUMBER TWO is for more COURAGE

and NUMBER THREE: the power to DO MORE MIRACLES.

Faith takes courage. We have often observed that actually asking someone you just commanded healing for if anything has changed is perhaps even more challenging than praying in the first place! What if they say “Nothing?!” – It’s a risk. Courage isn’t the ability to feel NO fear. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Courage is feeling the doubts and nerves and doing it anyway. COURAGE often  goes hand-in-hand with FAITH and is a brave thing to pray for!

So there is a picture emerging of a new way to focus and pray for healing. Its not a ‘needs-based’ focus but a Holy Spirit filling and faith-based focus.

More Holy Spirit

The FOURTH account of prayer in Acts is for OTHER BELIVERS to receive the Holy Spirit:

“When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit,” Acts‬ ‭8‬:‭15‬

So this baptism of fire and the empowerment to live as an effective witness begins to explode, not simply as a one-off event but as an infilling for all subsequent believers. No wonder then that it was said of them that: “They have turned the world upside down” Acts 17:6 KJV

So we see a clear picture emerging here of a Holy Spirit empowered PRAYER LIFE (A four step prayer model for healing and restoration!):

They prayed according to Acts:

  1. Fill us or baptise us with your HOLY SPIRIT. Acts 1:14
  2. Give us more COURAGE (to be your witnesses). Acts‬ ‭4‬:‭29
  3. Show your POWER through us (to heal and restore). Acts‬ ‭4‬:‭30
  4. And FILL OTHERS (with your Spirit) too so they may do the same. Acts 8:15

It’s clear that if we desire to see more miracles (including healing) that the Holy Spirit should be the focus of our prayer life too.

TRAINING VIDEOS ABOUT HOLY SPIRIT AND HEALING

How prayer proceeds and covers faith action

And so as we read through the book of Acts we see prayer often proceeds miracles.

The next mention of prayer in Acts concerns the newly converted Saul. He is in Damascus and struck blind from his encounter with the Lord (his dramatic conversion) and naturally – he has been praying. It does not tell us what he was praying (we can only guess that he is experiencing amazing revelations of the Lord Jesus?) but the result of this prayer is that HE RECEIVES A VISION. And at the same time the Lord also speaks to a fellow believer called Ananias and tells him:

“[Saul] is praying. In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.”” Acts‬ ‭9‬:‭11‬-‭12‬

So here we see a HEALING comes through another Spirit filled believer who by divine revelation lays hands on Saul to be FILLED with the Holy Spirit.

As we continue to read through the book of Acts, PRAYER is often cited as precursor to restoration (including physical healing), prophetic guidance and commission. In this way we see that prayer is always an accompaniment to faith action.

Prayer focus in the book of ACTS

Here are some other mentions of prayer in Acts.

Before raising a woman from the dead Peter PRAYS first. What does he pray? We are not told, but my guess is for FAITH and POWER to say and do the right thing! Which he does as he commands her dead body to get up…

“Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, “Tabitha, get up.” She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up.” Acts‬ ‭9‬:‭40‬ ‭NIV‬‬

In the same way Peters’ trance on the rooftop (when he experiences an open vision symbolising salvation for the gentiles) is proceeded by prayer. The result is a remarkable ACT of COURAGE (to break Jewish purity laws) and the baptism in the Holy Spirit for the Roman Centurion and his family (Acts 10).

Another distinct role of prayer in Acts is to pray for those who are being physically persecuted for their faith – arrested, beaten, imprisoned and worse.

“So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.” Acts‬ ‭12‬:‭5‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Of course, they pray for his safety and release, but for what purpose? So that he (and they) may continue to proclaim and demonstrate the gospel (with courage and power).

So we see prayer proceeding healing, revelation, salvation and resurrection. Prayer first – then the act or word of faith

OTHER PRAYERS

And so the prayers of the first believers go on to include: prayer before sending out missionaries (Paul and Barnabas), prayer for appointing elders (Acts‬ ‭14‬:‭23), prayers when parting company (Acts‬ ‭20‬:‭36), more prison breaks (Acts‬ ‭16‬:‭25), and more prayer before commands of healing (Acts‬ ‭28‬:‭8).

SO WHAT SHOULD I PRAY FOR HEALING?

In the early church, prayer was the essential ‘engine room’ or ‘spring board’ for the Spirit empowered life. Prayer proceeded baptism in the Holy Spirit (whether received directly or through the laying on of hands) and it proceeded and soaked all consequent acts of faith and courage for all kinds of healings and miracles.

So if you are in need of healing or you desire to be used to heal others – pray for the Holy Spirit to fill you to overflowing! This is not an easy get-out or a pat answer to cover all difficult questions (although it does!) but the wisdom of God from whom all healing flows.

There is much more to be explored in prayer and many other scriptures that exhort us into the richness of a fully mature prayer life (thanksgiving, contemplation, worship, intercession, praying in the Spirit, and listening prayer to mention a few). But Jesus promise that “Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do” was deeply rooted in His teaching (if you obey my commands of love) that we would receive the Holy Spirit and be one with Him and with each other. John chapters 14 to 17

As with all the blessings and manifestations of the Holy Spirit (including divine healing) they come by seeking first the Kingdom of God and King Jesus himself (who is in fact the Spirit 2 Corinthians 3:18). That’s why (particularly in regard to healing) our prayer life must be first and foremost about continually being filled with the Spirit but with an expectation to be used to heal others too. Then we can truly pray “Your Kingdom come and your will be done” in and through me today – for your glory.

“With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness and your every deed prompted by faith.” 2 Thessalonians 1:11

I checked out some of the TV footage recently from ‘Glastonbury ’23’ a popular UK music festival and came across the band SPARKS performing ‘The Girl is Crying in her Latte’ with Cate Blanchett (no less) doing the dance moves. I’ve got a soft spot for SPARKS having had some of their early hits like ‘No 1 in Heaven‘ back in 1979 (on 45 single). You’ve got to hand it to the two brothers for staying the pace over the last 50 years. Here’s a taste of the lyrics from their 2023 album:

“Is it due to the rain or is she in some pain.
She looks physically fine, Guess it’s something benign.
The girl is crying in her latte, yeah (repeat)
Now she’s leaving the place, Someone’s taking her place,
Orders, then takes a seat, Looks like it’s a repeat
The girl is crying in her latte, yeah (repeat)
So many people are crying in their latte (repeat)”

The song is incredible catchy (SPARKS do it again) but despite its ‘happy groove’ its theme is basically about coping with private distress in a public place. The song lyrics suggest it’s a universal experience – “looks like it’s a repeat” – and I guess sadly it is – and it’s what gives the song its appeal.

It got me thinking about the people we see in the supermarket, in the shops and in the cafes every day. Many people are just about holding it together – you know; we have a public face and a private face. In the market place we brush past strangers who seem OK, but many of us are not. However, in these socially sensitive times we are more anxious than ever of speaking to anyone for fear of saying something wrong or even worse – offending someone. It reminds me of how Jesus mingled in the public places and often crashed in through the thin veneer of social etiquette; he certainly wasn’t afraid of offending anyone. For instance, take the woman at the well…

“So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.” John 4:4-6

Odd that Jesus was there at all. Sychar was a place no self respecting Jew would go… Why? Because as far as they were concerned Samaritans were not only the wrong race, they were also religious heretics. To go anywhere near a Samaritan was to risk being spiritually contaminated – to be made unclean.

So here’s Jesus – tired and thirsty at the well. He has sent his disciples off into town to find food (remember this is an ‘unclean’ town so that mission was likely to be ‘interesting’ 😉) and he sees a Samaritan woman and asks her for a drink! Now this is shocking! This is not politically correct! She’s the wrong gender, the wrong race, and the wrong identity. It’s outrageous and offensive; so she gets triggered:

“The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans).” John 4:9

Jesus doesn’t try to avoid offending people if it’s a necessary consequence of helping them. He doesn’t live by social, religious or political expediency. He only does what he hears and sees his heavenly Father doing (John 14:10)… and on that day his Father was wanting to save and restore a world weary woman.

Can you help me please?

And so Jesus asks her for a drink. I love that. Jesus asks for help. Does he need help? No. She needs help, but Jesus empowers her by giving her the initiative. Jesus knows what he’s doing. One of the best ways to build trust is by asking someone for help – it builds a relationship by empowering others.

And then they have a conversation. She asks Jesus why on earth he is asking her for water – her being a Samaritan and a woman and all… and Jesus starts telling her about himself. He speaks about abundant life, overflowing life and eternal life and he uses the metaphor of – guess what? Water! Brilliant!

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life. John 4:13-14

Let’s take a note out of Jesus’ book and become good at explaining spiritual truth in everyday language. This is called rapport and we need to learn how to cultivate it. Don’t use strange religious language that people don’t understand – use simple everyday things that they do understand – the woman at the well – she understood water, so Jesus used water as a spiritual metaphor.

TRAINING VIDEOS ABOUT ‘THE WORD OF KNOWLEDGE’

Supernatural etiquette – handling divine revelation rightly

Even so it takes a little while for Jesus to get through – so he uses a powerful word of knowledge to get her attention. The Holy Spirit empowerment of the word of knowledge will do this – it’s designed to get people’s attention.

The word of knowledge is one of the gifts of the Spirit in 1 Corinthians 12 – it’s when you know something about someone else (by divine revelation) that has happened in their past or is happening now. The information is often key to what God wants to do in their lives. This gift of the Spirit effectively opens people’s hearts to receive healing and salvation.

So Jesus has information about this woman’s life that is not only ‘private’ but also potentially embarrassing or humiliating for her. As we said, Jesus is not averse to offending people – but he is not unnecessarily cruel or callous either. Watch how he handles the word with care and sensitivity (I added the words in parentheses)…

“Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ (affirmation) for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband (word of knowledge); in that you spoke truly.”” (another affirmation) John 4:16-18 NKJV

The word of knowledge is basically information. The woman already knows all too well about her marital situation and history so in one sense simply telling her this doesn’t help her much. What does matter is the life giving encounter that is happening around this revelation. Jesus is offering her an exchange; forgiveness and acceptance in return for her brokenness and rejection. This is important to understand when we are ministering in any divine revelation: “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt,” Colossians 4:6 – so that even hard truth brings comfort and encouragement.

She’s no longer crying in her latte

This is a good lesson for us, and as it turned out, for the woman as well – because she begins to believe in Jesus as the anointed King:

“The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, “Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?”” John 4:28-29 NKJV

So the woman tells her friends and neighbours all about Jesus and that Samaritan town ends up having a visitation – Jesus and his disciples stay in the town for a couple of days. A ‘chance’ encounter turned into friendships that would last.

This is a picture of what is happening across the world today. The true encounters are still happening ‘at the well’; in the market places, in the cafes and supermarkets (Check out our Miracle Cafes). Ordinary people like you and I are seeing what the Father is wanting to do and reaching out with healing and life giving words.

So here’s that SPARKS song again:

“Every day was the same (so many people)Tried to figure their game (so many people)They all ordered the same (so many people)Guess the world is to blame (so many people)

But the truth of the gospel has overcome the world and the power of the Spirit is able to break through – regardless of identity – whether race, status or gender, and minister to the precious person within. Perhaps you might notice someone ‘crying in their latte’ today… and the Holy Spirit will speak into their life in an unexpected way… (Hey that rhymes!… there just might be a song in there somewhere!)

Which is best – the FRUIT of the Spirit or the GIFTS of the Spirit? What do you think? Typically the FRUIT of the Spirit is known as the nine ‘character’ attributes of love, joy, peace, patience etc found in Galatians 5:22-23 and the GIFTS of the Spirit are the nine ‘power’ manifestations of the Spirit – prophecy, words of knowledge, healing and so on, from 1 Corinthians 12:7-11.

Usually when people say ‘FRUIT of the Spirit’ they think of developing ‘godly character’ and when people say ‘GIFTS of the Spirit’ they mean ‘having one or more of the supernatural gifts’.

A simplistic definition of the FRUIT and GIFTS can be that:

the FRUIT of the Spirit is the result of God working IN us

and the GIFTS of the Spirit are evidence of God working THROUGH us.

The first is primarily about me and the second is primarily about others. So which is more important?

How about 1 Corinthians 13 which tells us we can be the greatest prophet or miracle worker but without love it counts for nothing? And also when all things are made perfect there will be no need for spiritual gifts like prophecy because we will know (and be known) perfectly – but LOVE will remain (Could that be saying FRUIT is best?).

But just a minute, in John 14 Jesus clearly teaches that signs and wonders will accompany all those that believe in Him and these will be to authenticate the gospel and bring the Father glory (which makes GIFTS pretty important too).

The Wrong Question

You may have guessed that I’m not a fan of this ‘which is best’ question between the GIFTS and FRUIT of the Spirit and I think to even ask the question is an error of judgement. I don’t think it was ever the intention of these scriptures to separate out these two works of the Spirit and somehow pit them against one another. After all, the most important aspect of both the FRUIT and the GIFTS is that they are both manifestations of the Holy Spirit. In other words they are both GIFTS of GRACE, of divine origin (not from human effort) and therefore both of great value and to be desired in our lives.

Both FRUIT and GIFTS are manifestations of FAITH in God (that is to say, we don’t manifest FRUIT or GIFTS by ‘going after them’ but by pursuing God and His Kingdom):

The FRUIT of the Spirit comes through abiding in the TRUE VINE of Jesus and obedience to His word (John 15).

The GIFTS also come from the one Spirit and to those who greatly desire to serve the purposes of God (1 Cor 12).

The message of 1 Corinthians 13 is that the antidote to using the GIFTS of the Spirit in a prideful way is to ‘follow the way of love‘ 1 Corinthians 14:1 (Cultivate the FRUIT of the Spirit). But conversely the message of Galatians 5 is that if we want to cultivate the FRUIT of the Spirit – then we need to ‘Keep in STEP with the SPIRIT‘ (In other words – ‘eagerly desire what the Spirit desires – especially prophecy’ – 1 Corinthians 14:1)

The FRUIT is not for us but for the Father (John 15). Neither are the GIFTS ‘for us’ but these supernatural empowerments are to serve the purposes of the Spirit. (1 Cor 12)

Is there more to GIFTS and FRUIT?

The lists of GIFTS and FRUIT in 1 Corinthians and Galatians are not meant to be exhaustive but descriptive. In Romans 12 the SUPERNATURAL emphasis of the GIFTS of the Spirit in 1 Corinthians 12 is expanded to include qualities such as mercy, serving and giving (as well as prophecy). These are GIFTS that are usually associated with characteristics of the FRUIT of the Spirit.

Similarly in the teachings of Jesus spiritual FRUIT is often expanded beyond virtuous attributes to include other manifestations of the Kingdom such as salvation, healing and deliverance (the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few – Matt 9:37-38, and in regard to healing and miracles:

“If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” John‬ ‭15‬:‭7‬-‭8‬

So perhaps GIFTS and FRUIT have more in common than we might first think. Truly the Lord’s purpose is that the GIFTS and the FRUIT of the Spirit work together in unison to bring glory to God in our lives (much like the heart and lungs work together to oxygenate the blood).

Bells and Pomegranates

A picture of FRUIT and GIFTS working together appears in a wonderfully symbolic aspect of the priestly adornment in the Old Testament. As part of the instructions for the High Priests robe we read:

“Make pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn all the way around the lower hem, with gold bells between them, alternating the gold bells and pomegranates around the lower hem of the robe.” Exodus 28:33

The High Priest who served in the tabernacle of Moses would wear a garment that had both GOLDEN BELLS (symbolic of GIFTS of the Spirit – particularly prophecy) and FRUIT (in this case pomegranates) sewn onto the hem.

The people could not see the Priest when he entered the tabernacle – but they could HEAR him. In this way one symbolic meaning of the GOLDEN BELLS is the outward expression or manifestation of spiritual realities – the GIFTS of the Spirit (in the New Testament Paul uses ‘clarity of musical notes’ as a metaphor for clarity in prophetic ministry in 1 Cor 14:7).

The POMEGRANATES can symbolise the FRUIT of the Spirit; that which could be known and tasted and gave life (Taste and see that the Lord is good Ps 34:8).

This is far more a picture of ‘which is more important’ – because we need BOTH FRUIT and GIFTS TOGETHER working SIDE BY SIDE in wonderful harmony.

Is God developing our CHARACTER? Yes, as we seek Him above all things. Is God expanding our capacity to receive and use GIFTS of the Spirit? Yes, as we are obedient to the service of the Holy Spirit and desire to perceive and act as God perceives and acts.

The GIFTS of the Spirit are given to be FRUITFUL, the FRUIT of the SPIRIT increases our capacity to be used in true POWER.

FRUIT and GIFTS are complementary

I have seen over and over again the GIFTS handled rightly developing FRUIT in a person’s life. (for example: expressing sacrificial love, mercy to others and joy in God), and life-giving FRUIT in one’s life and character overflowing to others as powerful salvations and restoration in all its many forms.

Sure we are all ‘work-in-progress’ and that is why we have the admonition passages for the GIFTS of the SPIRIT in 1 Corinthians and the antidote to the works of the flesh as the FRUIT of the Spirit in Galatians. But – Praise be to God who gives us both the graces of LOVE and POWER: the true spiritual wisdom and understanding that enables us to live lives that are worthy of him – bearing FRUIT in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God and being filled with great POWER according to his glorious might! (Colossians 1:9-11).

What’s your PURPOSE? Do you have one? Ask most people that question and they’d likely shrug and say, “Er… hang on… my purpose? What do you mean exactly?” Or if they did have an answer it would be so vague as to not make a whole lot of difference to what life might actually look like: ‘Be a good person’, ‘Have a family and be successful’ – that sort of thing.

Most of us don’t think in terms of having a purpose, we just get on with it the best we can. We know what we like, we hope we’ll meet ‘the right person’ and settle down and then spend most of our time doing a job in order to survive; paying the rent and putting food on the table. There’s nothing wrong with that, but instinctively most also feel that there must be more to life.

But often, even our most significant decisions, like ‘where I’m going to live and work’ can feel, at best opportunistic; we just take what we can when we can get it. And at worst, they seem accidental. We sort of end up doing something because we just happened to be there at the time or we didn’t know what else to do. Perhaps our parents thought we should do something or ‘I just didn’t have a better plan’.

Ever feel like that? Well, you’re not alone. Many of us don’t feel like we’re in control of the direction of our lives; we’re just trying to get by with the limited choices and resources we have and (if we’re at all spiritually minded) asking God from time to time to help us out or bless us in those endeavours.

Have you ever wondered, ‘What do my dreams mean?’ Dreaming while sleeping is common to all the people of the world. From babies, to children, to adults; we all dream!

Dreams are strange experiences. Sometimes so lucid and convincing that they cause us to actually speak or move in our sleep. Dream worlds are weird. They have different rules, they seem to be mixtures of the familiar and the unknown.

Many people ignore their dreams, even if they are disturbing or intriguing. However since Bible times dreams have been recognised by spiritual people as one of the primary ways that God can speak to us.

Divine Guidance

Throughout Bible times God used visions and dreams to direct and help people. Why is this? I think one reason is that night dreams somehow help to switch off our ‘God blockers’ and we are simply more open to spiritual things when we are dreaming (this is reinforced by scientific studies that have demonstrated that the frontal lobes of the brain which are responsible for logical thought, are dormant during dreaming). Perhaps for some it’s the only time that God can get their attention at all!

Even so, dreams are tricky things to handle. For a start, all the rules seem different in dreams, strange things happen and we can do supernatural things like flying or translocating through space and time.

Dream Listening

One of the most challenging aspects to ‘dream listening’ is the ability to recall the dream. Often when we wake up, even though we may sense that we have just dreamt something significant, the memory of it can run away from us, like water down a plug hole! It’s so frustrating.

For most of us listening to our dreams doesn’t come easily, it requires effort and discipline. But just like so many other things we desire to learn, the best way to improve our ‘dream recall’ is to practice regularly. If you set about this with some effort and  begin to write down your dreams as soon as you wake up you will be surprised at how many details you begin to remember. Over time you will begin to recall your dreams more easily. If we can manage this then the next step is to make sense of our dreams.

Check out our video series on DREAMING and INTERPRETATION by JIM MCLAUGHLIN (watch the preview below)

Guidance and Direction in Dreams

So what is God going to speak to us about in our dreams? If we know the Lord and have been reconciled to God through the Gospel we would expect that God is going to speak to us about our relationship with him and about the plans he has for our lives (John 14:26). In our experience God has given us warning dreams, dreams about people he wants us to help, and dreams about things he has for us to do. He has also given us dreams that are simply about wonderful mysteries He wants to disclose about our relationship and his glory.

Here’s a few example of guidance God has given us in dreams:

Once when we were on holiday in Wales Aliss had a dream about a woman wearing a pentagram on bus and she also had problems with her back. That very same day we met the lady (serving in a shop) and ministered healing to her.

Some years ago I dreamt that I was driving down a road where we lived in a red sports car but it could hardly move. This dream confirmed that God was calling us to move and minister in another place (the red car represented a powerful ministry but we were in the wrong place, hence the difficulty moving forward).

A good friend of ours who worked with us often dreamt about the people who would be coming into our community café the following day. She would tell me in the morning about the dream and then the person would come in. This was a powerful way of preparing her for the ministry that would take place and affirmation of Gods grace and guidance.

Those examples didn’t need much interpretation, but they did need attention and could have easily been forgotten or ignored. However, with some ‘dream listening’ and a few written notes each one brought invaluable spiritual revelation and guidance that led to transformed lives.

Dream Interpretation

If we learn how to listen to our own night dreams it not only helps us to hear God but also equips us to listen and help others that may need some interpretation with their own dreams. We used to have a sign outside our shop in our city saying ‘Dream Interpretation’ and many people would come in asking about it.
The most common dreams people brought related to us were anxiety dreams, manifesting guilt, fears, and insecurities. God often uses these  dreams to prompt us to get right with others and with Him. To ignore these promptings or smother them with drugs or alcohol is a grave mistake. In Job 33 it says that God can use dreams to turn man from wrongdoing and keep him from pride.

Common Dreams

Other common dream themes are: ‘I’m hiding’, ‘I’m lost’, ‘I’m running away’, ‘I am trying to find something and no matter how many doors I open I cannot find it’… Have you ever had one of these? Even for those that may seem perfectly together in the day time – dreams often reveal what is going on inside.

For those wishing to minister life and hope to others dreams are a great invitation to speak of the hope and freedom of the gospel. Here’s a couple more common dreams:

‘Loosing teeth dreams’: this is Anxiety about aging, or attractiveness – it is fear of powerlessness…
Ecclesiastes 5 vs 3 says ‘a dream comes when there are many cares’

‘Naked dreams’: in the dream everything seems normal; we are going to school or work and then to our horror we realise that we have no clothes on! This is a vulnerability dream and we are afraid we will be found out for who we really are.

Of course, if you have just been to watch a horror film like ‘Jaws’ the night before and you dreamt about sharks chasing you then don’t need the gift of interpretation to know where that came from! However, sometimes it is useful to have a grasp of basic Biblical symbolism and meanings when it comes to listening to and helping others know what God might be saying to them in their dreams.

FAST FOOD (OR BANQUETING WITH ANGELS)

“Fasting possesses great power and it works glorious things. To fast is to banquet with angels.” Athanasius (4th Century)

In modernity we are blessed with an abundance of food only dreamed of by our ancestors. In fact, we have a variety of food available to us that would put many a former kings’ table to shame. Supermarkets provide us with year round international produce, perfectly prepared and ready to eat, picked and washed, cut and dried, butchered, baked and seasoned. A quick visit to a supermarket web site brought me up 420 results for yoghurt alone! We love our take-aways to be delivered straight to our door and programmes about food: sourcing it, cooking it and eating it, are some of the most popular on TV.

It’s hard to escape from the ubiquity of food and the idea of fasting for spiritual purposes seems oddly out of place in a society that practically worships it. Sure, there are fasting fads that do the rounds from time to time, you know, the one day on-one day off kind, but these are largely focussed on weight loss rather than spirituality.

WHAT IS FASTING?

Fasting is the discipline of denying ourselves the gratifying of a perfectly legitimate physical need or desire for a period of time. Traditionally in Christianity fasting has usually meant abstaining from eating food, or certain types of food, but it can include abstaining from other things too (like TV).

So what’s the benefit of fasting? Well, we all know that governing our physical needs and desires can be challenging. Watch a young child scream when it’s told it can’t have the chocolate bar; that’s what I’m talking about. On a basic level we are all that child and fasting, perhaps more than any other devotion, teaches us to control those desires.

Fasting, when practiced rightly, helps to introduce self-control and humility into other areas of our lives too. True fasting seeks a life governed and filled by God rather than by natural desires and needs.

It’s true that a legalistic approach, or too much emphasis on externals in any spiritual discipline will often make matters worse. You know what I mean; we’re good for a whole week and then have a massive binge to make up for it. But what the true Christian disciplines do, including fasting, is help us to humble ourselves and better position us to receive from the Holy Spirit. We must never see disciplines like fasting as making us good in themselves, but as useful tools that assist us to be teachable and allow the Holy Spirit to do his work.

WHAT DID JESUS SAY ABOUT FASTING?

In Matthew 6 Jesus specifically mentions three personal devotions (charity, prayer and fasting) and gives us helpful instructions on how to approach them. Just as we have not abandoned charity or prayer as normal aspects of the spirit filled life we have no reason to suppose that fasting is no longer of any value. Particularly since Jesus said, “When you fast”, rather than “If you fast”.

Jesus also taught us, much like the personal devotions of charity and prayer, that fasting is to be, as much as possible, a private activity between ourselves and our Heavenly Father:

“But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matthew‬ ‭6:17-18‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬

What Jesus promises us is that what is devoted to God in private will be rewarded by God openly. Putting it another way, a personal devotion to God within your heart will manifest as the fruit of the Spirit in the outward expression of your life. Galatians 5:22-23

MYTH BUSTING IDEAS ABOUT FASTING

So let’s just address a few misconceptions about fasting:

1. It will make me into a better person
No, it won’t. In the first instance it will probably make you a worse person! Who wants to be hungry! Grumpy, irritable, self aware, and even worse: smug and self righteous. That’s the work of fasting. Just as it detoxes your liver, so many weaknesses and unpleasant traits will begin to rise to the surface. What you do with these as they emerge dictates whether fasting will be of any benefit. Only recognising and taking these ‘toxins’ to the cross and surrendering them to Jesus will determine whether the Holy Spirit can do his work of deepening your faith and spiritual understanding.

2. I will get ill if I miss a few meals
For anybody who is healthy missing a few meals will not harm your body. In fact, on the contrary, there are many proven health benefits to fasting, for example, ridding the body of toxins.

However, if your doctor has advised you not to skip meals because of some health issues, there are many other forms of fasting available to you.

3. Great – fasting will help me lose weight!
Of course all calorie controlled diets are forms of fasting, but the general medical consensus is that fasting to lose weight is not a good idea and in fact it can do harm. Besides which, we really want to focus on the spiritual with devotional fasting, so let’s not get side tracked by other agendas.

4. I won’t be able to do my job
We all have different circumstances and physical demands when it comes to our occupations and we need to be sensible about what’s the right kind of fast and when is best to do it. For example, If you have a heavy physical job in the construction industry you may put your safety and that of others at risk with a prolonged food fast (say, consuming nothing but fluids for over three days). However, if you job is largely sedentary, reduced food intake should not prevent you from working. The thing is to be realistic and sensible about your needs and circumstances.

However, there is a great variety of types and duration of fasting that can fit your circumstances.

5. Fasting will persuade God to do something for me
In the Christian devotion of fasting we’re not in the business of ‘twisting God’s arm’ to make him do something for us. There is a time and a place for intercession (when we know we can pray confidently in line with God’s will), but with devotional fasting we’re not primarily focussing on this type of activity, but on humbling ourselves before God and allowing him to do his work in our hearts.

A note on eating disorders
And finally, I just want to mention eating disorders such as anorexia nerviosa. I would advise anyone with any kind of diagnosed eating disorder to avoid fasting. Get the ministry, counsel and help you need to get well, and be free from any debilitating eating disorder. You may be able to come back to fasting when you know you’re completely free of any eating disorder problem.

FASTING PRACTICALITIES

So how do we go about the devotion of fasting? Essentially, it’s not complicated. We decide what kind of fast we want to do, for how long and we get started. It’s important to determine exactly what you are going to fast from and for how long and, this is important, stick to it. Otherwise it’s amazing how easy it is for a fast to get compromised.

As with all the other spiritual devotions absolute secrecy may be a challenge, if not impossible. You’ll probably have to tell those you live with, and maybe even those you work with. Try and keep it on a ‘need to know’ basis, it won’t spoil your fast, God sees your heart.

When you’ve decided on the type of fast you’re going to do (and for beginners I don’t recommend anything longer than one day – in fact perhaps just start off by skipping one meal), begin to anticipate the fast with prayer and thanksgiving. Tell God that you, more than anything, are hungry for more of him in your life.

If you’re missing meals you still need plenty of liquids (food often contains water). Of course drink as much water as you like but also consider adding some fresh fruit juice or some mild herbal tea like camomile (caffeine free) to hot drinks.

Seriously consider cutting out addictive substances such as caffeine, alcohol, chocolate and high sugar drinks/snacks. In fact, just fasting from one of these (if you are a regular consumer) will likely be enough of a fast on its own. However, be aware that if you do this there can be very unpleasant withdrawal symptoms such as headaches that may take a few days to pass.

If you’re in a cold climate you may need to wrap up extra warm if you are doing a prolonged food fast.

SOCIAL CONSIDERATIONS

Another practical aspect of fasting is meal times. For many these are social times around the cooker and the table; times to be with family or friends. It’s perfectly possible to join in these times while fasting, perhaps with a drink.

One unfortunate side effect of fasting is bad breath. This will only be an issue in fasting that lasts 24 hours or longer because the body will begin to detox (a process whereby the body begins to release toxins which have built up over time). The bad breath is caused by these toxins coming out; so it’s all good. Sugar free mints or gum are a good antidote.

When you break your fast have something light and nourishing like vegetable soup and fruit juice. Praise God for his goodness and for the blessing of food and provision.

FASTING: SPIRITUAL PREPARATION

If we’re new to fasting it’s hard not to feel just a little self-righteous if telling others about it… God is revealing our pride already and we havn’t even started yet! Humble yourself and let the Holy Spirit do his work.

One thing you’ll notice pretty quickly is that our days are naturally punctuated by meal times. We talk of ‘lunch break’, but now we’re fasting it’s just an ’empty break’. The obvious way to use these times is in devotional prayer or reading. Prayer and fasting combine together in a very powerful way.

Before fasting you may consider meditating on a particular scripture during the fast. How about Isaiah 58 in which the Lord rebukes Israel for the misunderstanding of fasting:

““Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?” Isaiah‬ ‭58:6‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬

It’s not that fasting is wrong but that true fasting should bear this kind of fruit.

Fasting, when practiced well also yields times of joy. Times of heightened revelation and union with God. It brings us into a clearer perspective – a ‘God perspective’. We may experience times of deep peace and profound spiritual depth. Fasting can strip away barriers or blockages in our faith life and open up new vistas. Why not journal while you fast; the good the bad and the divine. See what God will reveal and speak into your life.

BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER

If we imagine our life is like a garden and Jesus is our master gardener, when it comes to our soul garden perhaps fasting, more than any of the other disciplines is going to make us face up to the more unpleasant jobs around the garden.

You see, just when we thought the garden was looking lovely and fruitful our Father God is going to put his finger on those areas which we’d rather ignore. He’s going to prune us back so that we can walk in more freedom and revelation of who he is in us, and bear even more fruit. Devotional fasting helps reveal some of these deep seated areas of fear and pride so that the Lord can deal with them. If we allow God to deal with us in these times of secret honesty and vulnerability, we will find that we are able to be more honourable to Jesus in public.

Through fasting we are able to be filled with a deeper reliance on God and walk in a proven trust. It empowers us to live an overcoming life that roots us deeper into the soil of God. A life filled with the abundance of heaven. Isaiah 58 goes on to say:

Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness will go before you,
and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.
Then you will call, and the Lord will answer;
you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.
