Hi Julie, I am not a theologian and a question like this really deserves to be explored in a longer format than I can give here. However, I think the essence of your question is ‘how can we discern if the manifestations of the Holy Spirit are genuine or not?’ – considering what Jesus said in Matthew 7: “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ Matthew 7:21-23.

I would say in answer to this: 1. Does this person lead a life that seeks to be worthy of the Lord (seek to do the will of the Father)? (Colossians 1:10) 2. Do these acts of power lead people to Jesus as legitimate ones do? (John 14:12) and 3. What is their fruit? Is it repentance, salvation and joy in the Holy Spirit? (Matthew 7:18). As regards Orthodoxy – scripture says salvation is through Christ alone (Romans 5:1-2) and Jesus is the only mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5) – He is our perfect orthodoxy!
