At a recent workshop one of the delegates asked me an interesting question: “Can I pray for healing for others even if I am suffering from the same problem myself?” The reasoning being that, if I am not healed in an area myself, how can I expect others to be healed through me. In many ways this conclusion makes sense, but only from a human way of thinking.

high jump

Creating an imaginary bar that we must leap over before we can be used by God is a popular but unbiblical construct. On the contrary, a spiritually mature paradigm isn’t swayed by “my personal circumstances” quite so easily. I don’t say this lightly or to judge anyone: I readily admit that I have much to learn in this area. But the principle is sound. Our salvation (and by definition, our divine provision, healing and deliverance) are from Christ alone who is the sole mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5). When we pray for healing for others it’s not our own health (or any other personal qualification for that matter) that we are putting our faith in, but the work of Christ to save, heal and restore.

‘Divine provision, healing and deliverance’ are explained in
‘The Threefold Miracle Mandate’ – a book by Rob Cresswell

I’ll let you into a secret (though not a very well kept one). When we ask the attendees to our workshops to indicate if they need healing you can guarantee nearly everyone will wave a hand. Then we ask the ministry team to stand up and get busy… and you guessed it, it’s the same people. Healing miracles follow in abundance.

The person who concludes that they can’t be used to pray for healing for others because they are sick themselves would, (by the same logic), also be tempted to stop giving because they were financially lacking. This is unspiritual thinking because it denies the power of God and looks to external circumstances that will ultimately close us down both in areas of provision and healing. In fact, on the contrary, the act of praying for others or giving out of lack can actually bring a release of health or provision into our own lives.

The spiritual reality is that we don’t give because we have plenty and we don’t pray for the sick because we are well… we do so because of the Word (Jesus) who is the way, the life and the truth to us (John 14). This is how we can expect the heavenly realities to flow and break us out of the natural and into the supernatural power of God.

Healing DVD Teaching Set:
Eight 20 minute episodes presented by Rob & Aliss Cresswell

Healing for ourselves and healing for others

We recently did a Spirit Lifestyle workshop (training in supernatural living) and roadshow (offering spiritual help to the public). A couple of days before the events Aliss started fighting off a cold virus – a very common experience for many at this time of the year. I was minded as we approached the event of an old joke; I pictured a sign hanging on the venue door: “Healing event cancelled due to sickness!” There is a human way of thinking that can begin to rear its ugly head at times like this – and it says, “You won’t look good, people will think you lack credibility… you’re just a phony”, but that is altogether the enemy’s work (Revelation 12:10).

Aliss is a contender and it will be no surprise to you that she gave the cold symptoms their marching orders and the event was a great success. Nobody at the workshop would have known. Many Christian leaders if put on the spot like this may be tempted to pretend that they are well and make a show of being okay in public, but there’s a big difference between pretending and contending. From the outside these two activities can look extremely similar – both can cause me to behave as if I don’t have a problem when I’m with others. But if I’m pretending to be well, I’m focusing on me and my image but when I’m contending to be well I focus on Jesus and His promises. One acts out of fear of man and the other acts out of faith. Pretending doesn’t continue when the show is over (it inevitably shows its true colours), but contending sees the battle through with or without the audience.

Keep trusting in all God’s promises when healing others (Psalm 103)

We may not all feel like we have the faith of others but even so, God in His wisdom will often surprise us even in our doubts and weaknesses because He is so incredibly good. And all He requires of us is the smallest step towards trusting in His goodness and power. We’ve seen this so many times as people say, “I’m off healing since ‘so and so’ didn’t get healed” and then they are used by God to pray healing for others and do an amazing healing miracle. What did they do? They simply got up despite their doubts and fears and tried again! So, getting back to our question: Can I lay hands on the sick and see them healed even though I have the very same thing myself? YES. OF COURSE YOU CAN! (And while you’re at it have some healing for yourself!).

“Praise the LORD, my soul;
all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
Praise the LORD, my soul,
and forget not all his benefits—
who forgives all your sins
and heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,
who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”

Psalm 103:1-5

When it comes to well-being we can have a tendency to focus on physical healing. The bad backs, the blood and skin conditions and the ‘incurable’ diseases – we have seen God heal all these and more. But having physical miracles like broken bones instantly mended is only one aspect of healing.

The Bible teaches us that we are not only physical beings but spiritual as well (Genesis 2:7) Putting it simply, on the one hand we have a body which is purely physical; it feels pain and is subject to aging, it needs food and sleep. But we also have a spirit which inhabits the body as long as the body is alive.

The real you

In Genesis 2:7 we are told that after God breathed into the man he had formed from the dust of the earth that he became a living soul. The word soul in Hebrew is nephesh and in Greek it is psuché (soo-khay). It means animated, breathing or life. It’s that inner consciousness that you identify as being the essential you; it’s where your thoughts, emotions and choices come from.

So the apostle John writes: Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.

When the Bible talks about healing and health it’s primarily talking about our relationship with God. It’s not exaggerating to say that the scriptures make prosperity and well-being synonymous with knowing and being known by the Lord.  (Proverbs 3)

When Paul writes: May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Thessalonians 5:23). He is saying, “may every part of you, know God’s love and saving grace.”

Saved, healed and delivered

The term ‘sozo’ is an ancient Greek word that appears throughout the New Testament narrative. The general sense of the word is ‘made well’ but in our English translations we actually translate the word ‘sozo’ into different aspects of ‘being made well’, depending on the context. So sometimes we translate it as ‘healed’ (usually meaning physically healed), sometimes as ‘saved’ (spiritually and/or physically ) and also as delivered (meaning ‘set free from something bad’).

Here’s some Biblical examples of how we translate the Greek word sozo into English (word translated from sozo in red):

  • “all who touched him were healed” Mark 6:56
  • “If you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” Romans 10:9
  • ‘I want to remind you that the Lord delivered his people out of Egypt’ Jude 1:5
  • ‘Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured.’ Luke 8:36

This teaching appears in our training video library

Healing God’s way

How does this help us with understanding healing God’s way? Because if we are finding that something physical isn’t getting healed through the prayer of faith then it may be a symptom of something ‘behind the scenes’ that needs dealing with. It may be that we need to deal with something ‘soulish’ or spiritual first.

Paul exhorts us in Corinthians to be spiritually aware (2 Corinthians 5:16 / 1 Corinthians 12:1). When we engage in the arena of healing we must have our spiritual eyes and ears open as well as our physical ones. We need to ask our heavenly Father how He wants us to help others.

The need for spiritual discernment

This is where the spiritual gifts come into play because when we understand that healing encompasses the whole person (body, spirit and soul), the ability to have spiritual discernment or prophetic insight are invaluable. (1 Corinthians 12)

Physical ailments can often be manifestations of spiritual problems that have not been identified or properly dealt with. For example if somebody is harbouring long term guilt it can manifest as inner anxiety. Generally the person may seem happy and perfectly OK on the surface. But over time this anxiety can begin to manifest in any number of physical ways such as skin conditions, regular headaches or posture related problems. And in turn, over time, these kind of  troubles can lead to more serious health issues. A prayer of faith may clear up these manifestations temporarily but if the root problem remains the condition will almost certainly reoccur.

A prayer of faith may clear up these manifestations temporarily but if the root problem remains the condition will almost certainly reoccur.

Now please don’t assume that if you suffer from any of these conditions then that’s the reason; we need to have discernment, everybody is unique. This is simply an important principle to know both for ourselves and when it comes to ministering healing to others.

God does all things well

So I guess what I’m saying is that there’s often more to healing and well-being than meets the eye. Don’t misunderstand me, most of the time nothing beats simple faith for powerful and effective healing, particularly for those who don’t yet know the Lord. But sometimes we have to dig a little deeper to see sustainable results.

This is why so often Jesus ministered not only to the physical problem but also to the spirit man. He was healing the whole person. He demonstrated the outward by miracles like ‘get up and walk’ and he healed the spirit man too, by announcing ‘your sins are forgiven, go and sin no more, live for God!’

God is never interested in doing half a job; He does all things well (Mark 7:37) and He always finishes what he has begun (Philippians 1:6). The testimony of the gospels is that when Jesus heals people his heart and will is to restore them completely, body and soul.

Dreaming while sleeping is common to all the people of the world. From babies to, children to adults – we all dream. Dreams are strange experiences, sometimes so lucid and convincing that they cause us to actually speak or move in our sleep. Dream worlds are weird; they have different rules, they seem to be mixtures of the familiar and the unknown.

Many people ignore their dreams even if they are disturbing or intriguing. However since Bible times dreams have been recognized by spiritual people as one of the primary ways that God can speak to us. Throughout Bible times God used visions and dreams to direct and help people.

I did a brief search for every account of someone having a dream in the Bible and soon discovered that there are more accounts of God speaking through dreams to those we might call ‘unbelievers’ than the faithful ones. That surprised me. So why is this? Well, I think one reason is that night dreams somehow help to switch off our ‘God blockers’; we are more open to spiritual things when we are dreaming. Perhaps for some it’s the only time that God can get their attention at all!

Even so, dreams are tricky things to handle… for a start, all the rules seem different in dreams – strange things happen and we can do supernatural things like flying or trans-locating through space and time. Then another thing about dreams is that when you wake up – even though we know that we have just dreamed of something significant, the memory of it can run away from us like water down a plug hole. It’s so annoying…

The art of learning how to listen to dreams

For most of us listening to our dreams doesn’t come easily, it requires effort and discipline. So if this is another way in which God speaks to us then we know that one of our challenges is learning how to remember our dreams. If we can manage this then the next is to interpret it.

It says in proverbs:

‘It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings’ Prov 25:2

So how much do we value God’s treasures? Are we willing to invest some time and effort to search them out? Perhaps God only wants to reveal these mysteries to people who care enough about them to value them. As a wise man once said – God doesn’t hide things from us – he hides them for us.

One of the major characteristics of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit according to Joel 2 and Acts 2 was that all people of the Spirit would have visions and dreams. I believe that if we are disregarding dreams as a way in which God can speak to us then we are missing out on a rich experience of spiritual revelation. God can speak to us in our night dreams if we are willing to listen to them.

What are our dreams going to say?

So what is God going to speak to us about in our dreams? As those who are born of the Spirit we should expect that God is going to speak to us about our relationship with him and about the plans he has for our lives… In our experience God has given us warning dreams, dreams about people he wants us to help, and dreams about things he has for us to do. He has also given us dreams that are simply about wonderful mysteries He wants to disclose about our relationship and his glory.

Here’s a few things God has told us in dreams:

  • Once when we were on holiday in Wales Aliss had a dream about a woman wearing a pentagram on bus who had problems with her back, that very same day we met the lady and ministered healing to her. (People seem to have an increased sensitivity to dreams when they are in a new environment).
  • Some years ago (before we opened our cafe) I dreamed that I was driving down a road where we lived in a red sports car but it would hardly move. This confirmed that God was calling us to move and minister in another place. (The red car represented a powerful ministry but we were in the wrong place – so it couldn’t move).
  • Later on a good friend of ours often dreamed about the people who would be coming into our cafe the following day. She would tell me in the morning about the dream and then the person would come in.

Those examples didn’t need much interpretation but they did need attention and with the Holy Spirit helped with preparation… it means we can actually pray for people God wants to help before we meet them – how cool is that?

Do you have a purposeful life? Ask the average person why they are here, what’s the reason for their existence, and you will probably get a shrug. Sadly, ask your average believer the same question and you’re likely to get the same answer. However, the scriptures are clear that we are created for a reason and that God has a purpose and a plan for all of us:

In Jeremiah 29:11 God says to his people that he has good plans for them:

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

And Ephesians 2:10 talks of the good works God has planned in advance for us to do:

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

So rather than being fatalistic about life and just going with the flow, there is surely an obligation on us to know what those plans may be. To live a purposeful life.

We make decisions every day. We have to go to work, or stay at home, we have to decide where to live, we may want to get married and have a family or stay single. These are all good things, but on what basis do we make these decisions? A better wage packet, a nicer neighbourhood or whatever seemed convenient at the time? Is God interested in where we live and work or who we marry? Of course He is, because surely these things have the biggest impact on what we’re going to do with our lives.

A Purposeful Life

Our experience is that if we will involve the Holy Spirit in every area of our lives he will guide and help us in every way. Our idea of what we need may be very different from his, and he knows what will bring us true fulfillment and purpose. Sometimes, if we’re way off track this can mean making some radical decisions about, for example, our job. Not just leaving it, (as I know many would love to do), but more often than not, changing jobs or getting a new career to do what God has always put on your heart. For some it may mean getting a job and for others beginning to study or learn new skills to excel in what you already do. I’m not just talking about careers here though, this can include vocations and volunteer roles, retirement roles or parenting skills.

This isn’t easy. In fact it can be extremely challenging and it requires not only faith but a lot of hard work. The main thing is to keep following those divine clues and promptings. The dreams and visions you have yourself, the affirmation of friends, the opportunities and circumstances that come your way and (perhaps most importantly), the peace in your heart that tells you that you’re on the right track.

Check out our 17 lesson online training course ‘Born for Purpose’.

Have you noticed that life is seldom straight forward. We imagine going from A to B in a straight line, but God almost never works like that. Our challenge is to keep partnering with the Holy Spirit through the highs and lows, the unexpected pit falls and the blessings of promotion; because through all these things God will work in our lives. And, if we keep following that dream, one day we will realize that, through God’s grace, we’ve arrived at the vision that he put in our hearts all those years ago. Not only that, but he has given us new ones too…

We were born to live a purposeful life, and unless we are intentional about finding and walking in that God-given purpose we will simply adapt and react to circumstances around us. The truth is that if you don’t have a purpose somebody else will give you one! It’s not that we are all born for fame or fortune (thank God for that!), but that the Lord has exactly the time and the place for you to do what you do best. Why don’t you start seeking God about His purpose for your life today?

While writing the script for the latest Spirit Lifestyle episode I came across a poem by T S Eliot called ‘Choruses from the Rock’. Here’s an extract:

The endless cycle of idea and action,
Endless invention, endless experiment,
Brings knowledge of motion, but not of stillness;
Knowledge of speech, but not of silence;
Knowledge of words, and ignorance of the Word.

Where is the Life we have lost in living?
Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge?
Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?

Written in 1934 it was a prophetic poem in a century that saw the application of innovation explode upon the world. Flight, cars, telephony, cinema, television, computers and internet; we even put a man on the moon. But as the poem so eloquently expresses: ‘Where is the Life we have lost in living? Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge?’

Ancient Pathways to personal freedom

In our Ancient Pathways series we’ve been exploring some of the classic Christian devotions that help us to invest in a God-centered life. This week we published the final Episode of the five devotions – Meditation – ‘living in the present’. Often overlooked and misunderstood the devotion of meditation has been practiced by Christians for millennia and is mentioned in the Bible as early as Genesis 24 when Isaac ‘went out to the field one evening to meditate’.

At the end of Matthew chapter 6 Jesus says that the world runs about in frantic activity after provision and security – but we are to pursue just one thing – God’s Kingdom and His righteousness. It’s not that provision and security are not important to God, they are, and he promises to fulfill all those needs – but only through our complete trust in Him. The discipline of meditation is one of the most precious of all the Christian disciplines because it helps us to stop. Not just on the outside, like we do when we’re relaxing (watching TV or listening to music), but rest on the inside as well.

It’s a mistake to think that ‘doing nothing’ is resting. Doing nothing when our hearts and minds are racing away isn’t resting, in fact it’s exhausting. That’s why many would rather keep busy. But Meditation helps us to rest on the inside too, to enter into the peace of God, and to know His rest in our soul.

So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. For whoever enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from His. (Hebrews 4)

Of course, As T S Eliot says in his poem, we don’t simply want ‘knowledge of words’, we want to know the Word Himself.

Filming in some peaceful meadows for our ANCIENT PATHS episode on devotional prayer this week it was nice to have some sunshine in a month that can be very rainy in the UK. Also pleased to mix in some lovely location shots from a day I spent at Valle Crucis Abbey in Llangollen.

In Matthew 6 Jesus instructed us to pray in secret, in the hidden places and not to seek the admiration of people. Of course in our western culture we have all but eradicated prayer from public life and I’m sure this was not what Jesus meant. In fact he encourages us to pray together in agreement with each other:

Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.

But secret devotional prayer is to complement our gathered prayer. It’s the way we purposefully turn our attention and hearts towards the Lord to express our personal submission to him and enter into communion and dialogue. Where we tell him our hearts desires and also learn to listen to His.

It’s been great to get the ‘Ancient Pathways’ online training series underway. This week we went to one of the highest waterfalls in North Wales called Pistyll Rhaeadr which means (spring of the waterfall). It took quite a bit of driving through those narrow Welsh roads to get there (you know, the ones where you’re always hoping that nothing is coming the other way) but the trip was worth it. We got some stunning footage of the falls and it really works well with the theme – ‘the overflowing life’.

We’re focusing on five classic Christian devotions in this series and this week we took a good look at charity. Not the common usage it has today to describe ‘non profit organizations’ but in the original sense of the word – ‘agape love’ or ‘godly giving’ (faith, hope and charity).

Here’s an extract from the training:

A JOYFUL GIVER

In regards to our soul garden let’s consider the private devotion of selfless giving. In Genesis 2 we see a picture of what this may be like from the Garden of Eden.

“Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it parted and became four riverheads.”

So as the river of giving flows out of us it also waters the garden of our souls. This river of life flowing out of Eden then also separates and flows through rich lands of gold and precious stone. This surely speaks to us of the way in which our heavenly Father will duplicate our offerings to enrich others.

As we said at the beginning there are two elements to the devotion of charity – giving to others and receiving from God – this creates the life flow.

It’s only in this context that we can understand what scripture means by a joyful giver. Just like waterfalls and fountains and overflowing bowls – when we give it isn’t something God has to prize out of our fingers – it’s actually an expression of a happy, yielded heart.

We’re getting ready to do a new 7 part video course as part of the Spirit Lifestyle eLearning portfolio. Typically we tend to have a focus on the Spirit empowered life. We see this as a personal calling but also as a mandate to encourage and equip others into a spiritually dynamic faith that sees the manifestation of God’s power in all kinds of wonderful ways.

The danger of with having an emphasis like this is that some other aspects of the believers life are in danger of being overlooked or ignored. On the whole this isn’t a problem because we know that we are talking to people who already have a good diet of other kinds of Bible teaching. However, there is an area of life that really is a major key to walking in public power and that is the private life of the believer.

Traditionally throughout history Christianity has revolved around the private life of devotions. The devotions of serving, praying, fasting, worship and meditation. These activities mean many different things to different people but I want to talk about these activities when they are done in secret.

Our new series is called – ANCIENT PATHWAYS TO PERSONAL FREEDOM… the invitation is to take ‘the road less traveled by’ and experience a deeper life in God that doesn’t ebb and flow but remains deeply anchored.

That we may be ‘filled with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the spirit gives.’ Colossians 1:9
